Jesse Helms (1921-2008)

I like most of the people I write obituaries for but this guy was a total asshole. The Racist Republican North Carolina Senator from 1973 to 2003 died of natural causes yesterday (July 4). Helms was a hardcore conservative who opposed abortion, homosexuality, affirmative action, school integration, etc. This man really hated civil rights.

"At the height of his power," the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, "he fought for the values of the old confederacy. He resisted the new South. He resisted the opportunity to fight for a more perfect union."

And this man was a Senator for 30 years. That's scary. He was also a pioneer of negative TV ads for campaigns. Sadly, all candidates use these now.

Washington Post columnist David S. Broder summed it up well in 2001 when Helms announced that he would retire from the Senate. Broder described Helms as "the last prominent unabashed white racist politician in this country."

This is another great quote from Mother Jones: Smart, fearless journalism: "He has a view of a fundamentalist Christian society in which everyone is not welcome. If you could pick up the South Africa of 20 years ago and transplant it to America, that's what he would do."

When Helms retired from Senate, President Bush said that the Senate was "losing an institution." After hearing about Jesse's death Bush said the following, "Throughout his long public career, Sen. Jesse Helms was a tireless advocate for the people of North Carolina, a stalwart defender of limited government and free enterprise, a fearless defender of a culture of life, and an unwavering champion of those struggling for liberty."

Our President called a rasict "an unwavering champion of those struggling for liberty."

Wow.

I am Back

So I am in a hot room in Chicago listening to "Everybody Must Get Stoned" by Bob Dylan. Sirius Internet Radio is amazing. This room needs some air conditioning, damn.

Anyway, I decided to take a break from blogging for a while. But I am back now. I am going home tomorrow (today at this point). I look forward to returning to NYC. I start my summer job on Monday so I will get some $$$$ yo.

Anyway, check back here for more posts soon.

Wednesday's World Cup Qualifying

Here are the World Cup qualifying matches which will be played today.

CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying
HOW IT WORKS
They are currently in the first round of qualifying. Winners advance to the second round of qualifying which is just a two legged affair against another country. The third round contains 3 groups of 4 teams. The two best teams from each group advance to the final round. In that final round 3 of the top 6 advance to the World Cup. The 4th place team plays a team from South America in a two-legged affair to see who goes to the World Cup.
TODAY'S MATCHES
There are 10 matches today. They are mostly second legs and the numbers in parenthesis is the score of the first leg. Some of the teams are only playing one leg because they skipped the first leg for some reason. Those matches obviously won't have scores in parenthesis.

Barbados (1) vs. (1) Dominica: The winner faces the United States in the next round on June 15 in California. The second leg will be sometime between June 18 and 21 in out opponents country.
Belize (3) vs. (1) Saint Kitts and Nevis: The winner takes on Mexico in the next round.
St. Lucia (1) vs. (2) Turks and Caicos Islands: The winner faces Guatemala.
Netherlands Antilles (0) vs. (1) Nicaragua: The winner faces Haiti.
Antigua and Barbuda (3) vs. (0) Aruba: The winner faces Cuba.
Bahamas vs. British Virgin Islands: This is the first leg and the second leg is being played on March 30. The winner faces Jamaica.
Grenada vs. US Virgin Islands: There was no first leg played. The winner plays Costa Rica.
Puerto Rico vs. Dominican Republic: No first leg was played. This will be interesting. The winner faces Honduras.
Montserrat vs. Suriname: There was no first leg played. Montserrat is the lowest ranked team in the world. The winner faces Guyana.
Anguilla (0) vs. (12) El Salvador: That is not a typo. El Salvador won the first leg 12-0. The winner (gee, I wonder who that will be?) face Panama.

So to simplify it the US has to:
1. Beat Barbados or Dominica.
2. Finish top 2 in a group that is likely to have the US, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba.
3. Finish top 3 in a group that will probably include the US, Guatemala, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama.

Asian Football Confederation World Cup Qualifying
HOW IT WORKS
They are currently in the third round which consists of 5 groups of 4 teams. You play each team in your group twice and the top 2 teams advance. They will then go into 2 groups of 5. You play all teams in your group twice and the top 2 from each group qualify for the World Cup.
TODAY'S MATCHES
All of the teams are in action today.
Group A
China 0 vs. 0 Australia: In the 89th minute Australia's keeper Mark Schwarzer fouled Qu Bo in the box and a penalty was called. But the Middlesbrough keeper saved Shao Jiayi's penalty kick and the match ended in a draw.
Qatar vs. Iraq
Group B
Thailand vs. Oman
Bahrain vs. Japan
Group C
North Korea 0 vs. 0 South Korea: This must have caused a lot of controversy.
Turkmenistan vs. Jordan
Group D
Uzbekistan 3 vs. 0 Saudi Arabia: I am happy to see an Arab absolute monarch lose to a country I have trouble spelling.
Singapore vs. Lebanon
Group E
Syria vs. UAE
Kuwait vs. Iran

Robert Johnson

I was looking through lists of the greatest guitarists ever and Robert Johnson kept appearing in the top 10. So I said to myself "Who is Robert Johnson?" It turns out he was extremely important in the history of music.

Robert Johnson lived from May 8, 1911 to August 16, 1938. He born and died in Mississippi. His life is poorly documented and only 29 of his songs were recorded. He was a delta blues musician and is called the "Grandfather of Rock-and-Roll". According to Wikipedia he has influenced greats like John Fogerty, Bob Dylan, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones, Paul Butterfield, The Black Keys, The Band, Neil Young, Warren Zevon, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton. I find it incredibly weird that I can not find anything on the connection between B.B. King and Johnson. They were both born in Mississippi and King was 13 years old when Johnson died. Johnson traveled around the state so how would B.B. King not know of him? They both play the same style so it is VERY odd.

Johnson started his career by traveling along the Delta. Buses, trains and hitchhiking were his modes of transportation. Folklore says he sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for the ability to play the guitar like no one else could. Johnson went around towns and played on streets and in shops. He played everywhere. He wrote songs and played what people requested.

He died at the infamous age of 27. The cause of his death is unknown. One theory is that Johnson was flirting with a women at a dance so her husband poisoned his drink. He is a member of the infamous 27 Club. That club also includes musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.

"The Complete Recordings" was released in 1990 and it contains all of the songs he recorded. They were recorded in November of 1936 and June of 1937. It is two disks and contains 41 songs. 12 of them are alternate takes of songs so there are only 29 different songs. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.

Johnson has inspired a lot of songs. Eric Clapton released a tribute album in 2004 named Me and Mr. Johnson in where all 14 of the tracks were written and recorded by Johnson. Many of his songs have been covered. The Rolling Stone's songs "Love in Vain" and "Stop Breaking Down" were written by Johnson.

I suggest you listen to his stuff. I think it is great and he sings just as well as he plays guitar.

Here are the lyrics to "Love in Vain Blues":

And I followed her to the station

with a suitcase in my hand

And I followed her to the station

with a suitcase in my hand

Well, it's hard to tell, it's hard to tell

when all your love's in vain

All my love's in vain

When the train rolled up to the station

I looked her in the eye

When the train rolled up to the station

and I looked her in the eye

Well, I was lonesome, I felt so lonesome

and I could not help but cry

All my love's in vain

When the train, it left the station

with two lights on behind

When the train, it left the station

with two lights on behind

Well, the blue light was my blues

and the red light was my mind

All my love's in vain

Ou hou ou ou ou

hoo, Willie Mae

Oh oh oh oh oh hey

hoo, Willie Mae

Ou ou ou ou ou ou hee vee oh woe All my love's in vain

Weekend Football

Here are some of the games that caught my eye. All times are Eastern Standard Time and the home team is listed first. The most important game is USA vs. Honduras on Saturday at 7 P.M. of course!

Saturday
English Premier League
Derby vs. Manchester United (11:00): Wow, this will be pure domination. Who doesn't love a 6-0 match?
Liverpool vs. Reading (11:00): American goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann will shut down Liverpool! (ok probably not).
West Ham vs. Blackburn (11:00): Jonathan Spector is in action for West Ham and Brad Friedel for Blackburn.
Arsenal vs. Middlesbrough (13:15): Arsenal needs to start playing well again to stay at the top of the table.

Scottish Premier League
Motherwell vs. Celtic (8:00): Go Motherwell!

German Bundesliga

Hannover 96 vs. Arminia Bielefeld (10:30): Cherundolo in action for Hannover.
Energie Cottbus vs. Bayern Munich (10:30): The best team in Germany against the worst. This will not be pretty!

Sunday
Fulham vs. Everton (9:30, English Premier League): Fulham really needs to beat Tim Howard and Everton.

Dundee United vs. Rangers (11:00, CIS Insurance Cup Final): Rangers have won this cup more than any other team; winning it 24 times (last in 2005). Dundee United has won it twice; the last time being 1981. Only 3 of the last 12 finals have been decided by one goal so don't expect a close game.

Almeria vs. Barcelona (14:00, Spanish Primera División): Barcelona needs wins and Almeria needs points to qualify for the UEFA Cup.

Inter Milan vs. Palermo (10:00, Italian Serie A): Inter trying to maintain their spot at the top of the table while Palermo is battling for a UEFA Cup spot.

German Bundesliga
Werder Bremen vs. VfL Wolfsburg (12:00): 2nd place Bremen needs to be perfect to jump Munich.
Bayer Leverkusen vs. Nurnberg (12:00): 4th place Leverkusen looking to improve their position and under-achieving Nurnberg are looking to climb out of relegation.

Dutch Eredivisie
Ajax vs. Willem II Tilburg (9:30): 2nd place Ajax are looking to get closer to jumping PSV and Willem is battling relegation.
Roda JC Kerkrade vs. PSV Eindhoven (9:30): PSV is looking to increase their lead at the top of the table over Ajax. Roda is looking to secure their place in UEFA Cup qualification playoffs.

Champions League and UEFA Cup Draw

The draw was just announced for the eight remaining teams. My predictions are in bold.
Champions League
Quarterfinals
Arsenal
vs. Liverpool
Arsenal hasn't been playing their best lately (tying Wigan) but I think this could be their year.
Roma vs. Man United
Roma has no chance.
Schalke vs. Barcelona
I would love to see Schalke win but come on.
Fenerbahce vs. Chelsea
Go Fenerbahce! Sadly, not gonna happen.

Semifinals
Arsenal v Chelsea
I really do not to pick here, could go either way.
Barcelona v Man United
United does not seem Championship caliber.

Championship: Barcelona vs. Arsenal
Rematch of the 2006 final. Same result!

Uefa Cup
Quarterfinals
Bayer Leverkusen vs. Zenit St Petersburg
The underdogs will continue their run.
Rangers vs. Sporting Lisbon
Rangers going far? Eh.
Bayern Munich vs. Getafe
This won't be pretty.
Fiorentina vs. PSV
They played well against Everton.

Semifinals
Bayern Munich vs. Zenit St Petersburg
Munich may be arrested for the beating they give on the Russian side.
Sporting Lisbon vs. Fiorentina
Gut pick, not sure who to choose.

Championship: Bayern Munich
vs. Fiorentina
Munich is too good for this tournament.

USA vs. Cuba

So the USA tied Cuba in their opening match of 2008 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying. Under-23 teams play in this. My recap of the match can be found here:
http://www.americansoccerdaily.com/news/usacubaoq110308.htm

The game ended 1-1. It seriously upsets me too much to talk about. Adu scored for his and Altidore left after the 1st half because he got nicked up (nothing serious).

Freddy Adu and Dax McCarty played great. Adu was by far the best on the field. He played really well.

That is all I can say, it is too upsetting. The fact that 5 Cuban players are now missing made it a bit easier:
http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2008/03/five-cuban-play.html

That is insanely funny. They got defected, hahahahahaha!

At least the USA Women won the Algarve Cup. They defeated Denmark 2-1 in the Championship. My recap is here:
http://www.americansoccerdaily.com/news/uswdenalg120308.htm

Two Americans played yesterday in lower division English games. View my recaps here:
http://www.americansoccerdaily.com/news/eng110308.htm

Also, Everton lost to Fiorentina in the UEFA Cup. View my recap here:

I will make more entries later tonight.

Minute by Minute: Inter Milan vs. Liverpool

Liverpool won the first leg 2-0 so if they score once Inter will have to score 4 goals. I just tuned in in the 2nd minute and will record my thoughts as it happens.

5th minute: Ball is crossed into Cambiasso and his shot is blocked and goes out for a corner. Chivu takes the corner, it went over everyone.

8th minute: Free kick to Inter and they take it immediately. They get into the box but it is cleared. Off the throw in Cruz takes a nice shot but the keeper makes a diving save an it goes out for the corner. The corner goes over everyone again. Ball is cleared.

11th minute: Maicon puts it in the box for Inter but no one is there and it is cleared.

12th minute: Zanetti runs down the middle and is taken down. Like Ray Hudson said they should have played the advantage but a foul was called. Free kick taken by Ibra and it hits the wall. Ryan Babel got a yellow card though (encroachment or a hand ball). Another free kick is taken a little closer to net. Ibra puts it over the crossbar.

16th minute: Inter continue to control the ball. Liverpool has barely had it on the attack in the last few minutes.

17th minute: Shot from far out goes way over, goal kick taken by Reina.

18th minute: Torres gets it inside the box but the ball is taken away. Throw in taken from near the top of the box. Balls gets knocked around. Throw in again from about the same position. Ball is cleared down field. Gets back down near the Inter goal but a bad long ball results in a goal kick.

19th minute: Foul on Cruz. Appeal for a card does not work. Free kick taken on goal by Stankovic is easily caught by the keeper but the whistle was blown on an Inter defender and it is Liverpool's ball.

21st minute: Stankovic hits a long ball down field, goes out for an Inter throw near the top of the box. Eventually gets cleared after a few players got touches on it.

22nd minute: Zanetti runs down the left side but slips. Tries to get the ball while on the ground and the referee calls a free kick to Liverpool.

23rd minute: Gerrard feeds Kuyt down the right flank but Kuyt's cross is not a good one. Inter fans are booing knowing they need goals.

25th minute: Stankovic runs into the right side of the box but the ball is taken. The ball is cleared to Babel down the field and the keeper is forced to come out and clear it.

27th minute: Gerrard gives it to Kuyt on the flank, Kuyt puts in a cross and it is cleared for a corner. Gerrard's corner is cleared by Inter.

29th minute: Defensive mistake by Cambiasso is almost taken advantage of by Torres who attempts a shot from very close but he is at a bad angle and it is saved by the keeper.

30th minute: Ibra takes a shot from the left side at the edge of the six yard box, he just puts it past the far post. Great chance wasted for Inter.

32nd minute: Torres gets the ball on the left flank and it is crossed to Babel on the right. Babel crosses it to Kuyt whose shot goes wide, not really close.

34th minute: Awful pass in the defense is taken advantage of by Kuyt. His shot goes off a defender and then goes off his head out of bounds for a goal kick.

34th minute: Inter's Burdisso gets a yellow card for a stupid foul.

37th minute: Ball is going back and forth with no significant chances.

40th minute: Zanetti gets by a defender and puts in a cross that was two deep. It was caught by the keeper. On the counter Kuyt had it on the left side but could not found a teammate.

43rd minute: Inter passes around in the box but a shot is not produced.

43rd minute: Maicon put in a strong pass from about 10 yards out and Cruz tried to flick it into the goal but Reina was there. Great save.

45+1 minute: Inter free kick is cleared out of the box.

45+2 minute: Vieira goes down the field and finds Stankovic who crosses it from the right side but can not find Ibra. The ball is cleared and the half is over.

HALFTIME: INTER MILAN 0 LIVERPOOL 0
The game has been controlled by Inter Milan. Inter has put two good shots on goal. Cruz forced the keeper to make a diving save and he almost scored on that flick on. Two stupid defensive mistakes by Inter produced Liverpool's only real chances. I wouldn't be surprised to see Liverpool bring in an extra defender at the beginning of the half. Maybe bring in Riise for Babel since he has a yellow card.

46th minute: And the second half has begun, Inter really needs goals.

48th minute: Gerrard gets a yellow card. He had possession outside the box and lost the ball. He slide in to get it back and was given a card.

48th minute: Vieira gets it on the edge of the box and dribbles in. He does not do a good job though and it is taken away.

49th minute: It looks like Figo is coming in for Inter soon.

51st minute: Burdisso gets a second yellow card and he is out of the match. Burdisso fouled a Liverpool player and then tried to say that he was fouled! Inter is down to 10 men and need 2 goals, it is not looking good for Inter fans.

52nd minute: Chivu's free kick from a good position goes insanely wide of the net.

53rd minute: Kuyt runs on to the ball in the box on the right side and tries to pass across the box but it is cleared.

56th minute: Vieira feeds it to Stankovic who is on the right side of the box. He pouts a ball in towards the center of the box but it is cleared. Aurelio then gets a yellow card for a foul on Chivu near the box. Free kick taken by Ibra and goes way over the cross bar.

57th minute: Mistake by a Liverpool defender leads to a two on one and Ibra tries to score from about 10 yards out but this shot goes wide. He should have given it to Cruz who would have had an easy tap in.

59th minute: Soft header is easily saved by Reina. Liverpool counters and Rivas gets a yellow card for a foul on Babel just outside of the box.

60th minute: Gerrard's free kick is saved by the finger tips of Inter's keeper. The corner produces play around the box but no shots are produced.

61st minute: LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION: Yossi Benayoun for Ryan Babel.

64th minute: LIVERPOOL GOAL! Aurelio gets the ball to Fernando Torres. Torres turns and puts in a great shot from just outside the box. And that will be the end of Inter's Champions League dreams.

66th minute: The Liverpool supporters are very loud. I hope Inter supporters leave them alone when they sing You'll Never Walk Alone.

68th minute: With the way the game is going, Inter will be lucky to score one goal.

68th minute: Gerrard takes a soft shot from the top of the box and it is easily saved by the keeper.

71st minute: Free kick taken by Cruz from the top of the semicircle and it goes over the bar, not even close.

72nd minute: Benayoun puts in a cross from the left side of the box and it is knocked out by Inter's keeper. Gerrard's corner is caught by the keeper.

73rd minute: Stankovic commits a bad foul out of frustration and is given a yellow card.

74th minute: Benayoun gets a yellow for a foul.

76th minute: INTER SUBSTITUTION: Pele for Patrick Vieira.

79th minute: Ibra gets the ball and hits the ball way over the crossbar from about 9 yards out. He really should have done better.

80th minute: INTER SUBSTITUTION: David Suazo for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

81st minute: LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION: John Arne Riise for Dirk Kuyt.

84th minute: Torres almost receives a ball that would have definately been a goal but it is cleared by Inter.

84th minute: INTER SUBSTITUTION: Luiz Jimenez for Dejan Stankovic

85th minute: Chivu receives a yellow card for Inter while Hudson tries to remember if he was booked before. Silly old man.

88th minute: LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION: Jermaine Pennant for Javier Mascherano.

90th minute: There will be three minute of extra time.

And that is all folks. Liverpool win the match 1-0 and 3-0 on aggregate. They advance to the quarterfinals. The announcer just said Liverpool has done the Italian job. How corny. The quarterfinal draw will take play on March 14. The first leg will be played on April 1st or 2nd and the second leg will be played on April 8th or 9th. Inter will now have to focus on Serie A. They lead the league by 6 points over Roma with 9 games left.

F.A. Cup Semifinals

Barnsley will host Cardiff City and West Brom will host Portsmouth. Not the teams you expected to make it this far? It is pretty odd that 3 Championship clubs and only 1 Premiership club is in the semis. The matches will take place at Wembley Stadium on April 5 and 6.

The story of the tournament has been Barnsley who won 2-1 at Liverpool and then beat Chelsea 1-0 at home. Either Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea have won the Cup since 1996 so we will see a nice change of pace. A team outside of the top division has not won the Cup since West Ham did it in 1980.

Barnsley vs. Cardiff City
Barnsley defeated Liverpool at Anfield 2-1 in the Round of 16. Then they followed it up by defeating Chelsea 1-0 at home in the Quarterfinals. By hearing this you wouldn't believe that they are battling relegation in the Championship division. Well, they are. In between their last two F.A. Cup matches they lost to Norwich, tied QPR, tied Sheff Wed. and tied Blackpool. But somehow they beat two of the best teams in the world. Barnsley has not played in the Semifinals since they won the tournament in 1912. They defeated West Brom in the final that year.

Cardiff City is mid-table in the Championship division. The team out of Wales has not played in the semifinals since they won the tournament in 1927. They defeated Arsenal in the final. Cardiff have had an easier road to the finals; defeating Wolves in the Round of 16 and Middlesbrough in the Quarterfinals.

West Brom vs. Portsmouth
Portsmouth is actually the favorite in something, who knew? If someone told me that out of all EPL clubs, Portsmouth would go the furthest, I would probably kill their whole family. Portsmouth won the Cup in 1939 and defeated Wolves in the final. Portsmouth upset Manchester United at Old Trafford 1-0 in the Quarterfinals.

West Brom is historically one of the best F.A. Cup teams. They have appeared in 10 finals and won 5 of them. But 9 of the finals were before the 1950s so it's not THAT great. They won the Cup in 1968 and defeated Everton in the final. West Brom currently has a spot in the Championship's promotion playoffs. They are only two points behind 2nd place Stoke City who are in a position to be promoted without having to go through the playoffs. They have also played two less games than Stoke.

I really hope any team but Portsmouth wins. There are good stories for every club. Barnsley has been the upset kings while Cardiff would be the first team to win the Cup from Wales since they did it in 1927. Portsmouth is the only EPL club and West Brom can win this and get back to the EPL and play like they did in the old days.

Clint Dempsey turns 25 today. The American forward played on the New England Revolution from 2004 to 2007 before being bought by Fulham for $4 million. Roy Makaay turns 33 today. The Dutch striker started his career at the Dutch club Vitesse in 1995 and remained there until 1997. He played in over 100 games and scored over 40 goals while at Vitesse. He then transfered to Spanish side CD Tenerife and played there from 1997 to 1999. Makaay played at Deportivo La Coruña from 1999 to 2003 and played over 130 games; scoring more than 75 goals. Roy then left Spain and played for Bayern Munich from 2003 to 2007. While with the German powerhouse, he played in over 125 games and scored more than 75 goals. He won the European Golden Boot in the 2002-03 season for scoring the most goals in Europe. He came back to the Netherlands in 2007 to play for Feyenoord. He has played in over 25 games and scored over 10 goals for the Dutch side.

Makaay played for his country 43 times and scored 6 goals. Due to an abundance of Dutch strikers, he has never played in the World Cup but played in Euro 2000 and 2004.

Saturday's Football

Here are the results.
F.A. Cup Quarterfinals

Manchester United 0 vs. 1 Portsmouth
Awesome!! I watched the second half on my computer. Man United keeper Tomasz Kuszczak got a red card in the 78th minute for a challenge on Milan Baroš. A penalty was awarded and Rio Ferdinand was the goalkeeper! Sulley Muntar took the penalty and scored. Rio almost saved it! I am so happy that Manchester United lost.
Barnsley 1 vs. Chelsea 0
WOW! First they won at Liverpool and now at home against Chelsea. I really hope Barnsley wins the Cup.

English Premier League
Liverpool 3 vs. Newcastle 0
Pennant, Torres and Stevie-G scored for Liverpool.
Blackburn 1 vs. Fulham 1
Eddie Johnson, Kasey Keller and Clint Dempsey started. McBride also played as a sub. Late goal from a Bullard free kick got Fulham a point. They really need wins though.
Reading 2 vs. Manchester City 0
Wow, big win. Shane Long in the 62nd and Dave Kitson in the 88th for Reading. Reading really needed a win.

Spanish Primera División
Real Madrid 2 vs. Espanyol 1
Espanyol scored first but Madrid came back. Raúl scored the winner on a penalty.
Real Zaragoza 2 vs. Atlético Madrid 1
An own goal and a penalty led Zaragoza to victory.

Italian Serie A
Inter Milan 2 vs. Reggina 0
Ibra scored on a PK and Burdisso scored as well.

German Bundesliga
VfB Stuttgart 6 vs. Werder Bremen 3
Mario Gómez hat trick led Stuttgart to victory. I want to see these highlights.
Bayern Munich 2 vs. Karlsruhe 0
Toni and Ribéry led Munich to victory.
Arminia Bielefeld 0 vs. Schalke 2
Easy win for Schalke over Arminia Bielefeld who is in a relegation battle.

Dutch Eredivisie
Heerenveen 3 vs. NAC Breda 0
Michael Bradley scored but he might not be credited with the goal. Apparently he hit and then it hit a defender and then went in so they might be calling it an own goal. I am not sure.
Willem II Tilburg 1 vs. Groningen 2
Big. Willem scored on a penalty in the first half. Groningen scored on an own goal in the 82nd minute and then Sepp De Roover got them the win in the 84th minute.

Scottish Cup Semifinals
Queen of the South 2 vs. Dundee 0
Dundee striker Derek Lyle missed the game because he fell through his glass coffee table. He and his friend were messing around and they tripped on the rug and he fell through the table. He had to get stitches. LOL.
St. Johnstone 1 vs. St. Mirren 1
A replay will be played to see who plays Queen of the South in the final.

There it is. Also, the US Women defeated Italy 2-0 in the Algarve Cup yesterday. My recap of the game can be found here: http://www.americansoccerdaily.com/news/uswita070308.htm

Hannah Montana Now #1 Leading Cause in People Not Wearing Seatbelts

WARNING, INCREDIBLY BORING BACK STORY:
So I was speaking to a friend of mine and today is his birthday. He asked me to help him spam Miley Cyrus' fan wall by asking her to marry him. I asked who the hell is Miley Cyrus and apparently it is Hannah Montana. Usually in this situation I would say "o rly?" but whatever, I did it. After doing so I went to her Wikipedia page and looked around and I found this link:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,330634,00.html
END OF BACK STORY

That article is great. While shooting their new "hit" movie Miley and her father Billy Ray Cyrus got in a car and forgot to buckle their seat belt. Someone noticed and they apologized. Apparently 65 percent of the 13-to-15-year-olds killed in auto accidents in 2006 were not wearing seat belts and Miley is 15. A bunch of suburban mothers wrote in....yea you get it, I don't feel like typing this retarded story anymore.

Ok, where to start the criticism. First of all, hit movie? Hit movies are seen by more people than 10 year old girls and 45 year old men who record the movie and go home and whack off to Miley. If your child does not wear a seat belt because Hannah Montana doesn't then you might as well give up and send them to boarding school. They are obviously legally retarded.

How do they know 65 percent of 13-15 year olds killing in auto accidents in 2006 were not wearing seat belts? When they find a kid splattered on the street after an accident, what evidence is left behind that a seat belt was not worn? Ok maybe if the parent lives they would know but come on, they wouldn't remember.

Sheltered suburban families are annoying.

Jesper Parnevik Turns 43 Today

The Swedish golfer was born in Stockholm, Sweden on this day in 1965.

As an amateur; he represented Continental Europe at the 1986 St Andrews Trophy and he represented Sweden at the 1984 and 1986 Eisenhower Trophy. Those are two of the best Amateur team golf tournaments in the world.

Parnevik turned pro in 1986 and started playing on the European Tour. He became a full member on tour in 1989 by winning the 1988 European Tour Qualifying School Tournament. Two fourth place finishes on tour in 1989 helped him finish 50th on the money list. He earned £55,538 on tour that year. He also played on minor tours early in his career and won the 1988 Ramlosa Trophy, 1998 Odensa Open (both in Sweden), 1998 Open Passing Shot (France) and the 1990 Swedish Open International Stroke Play. Parnevik finished in second at the 1994 British Open; only one stroke behind Nick Price.

He won his first European Tour tournament at the Bell's Scottish Open in 1993. He won by a margin of 5 strokes over American Payne Stewart. Parnevik picked up his second European Tour win at the Volvo Scandinavian Masters in 1995. Jesper split time between the PGA and European Tour in 1994 and 1995. Since 1996 he has played on the PGA Tour full time and only plays on the European Tour occasionally. His last two wins on the European Tour was at the 1996 Trophée Lancôme and the 1998 Volvo Scandinavian Masters. He finished 17th on the money list in 1993, 26th in 1994 and 17th in 1995.

Parnevik's great performances led to him to be selected to the European Ryder Cup team in 1997, 1999 and 2002. They won in 1997 and 2002. His overall record at the Ryder Cup is 4-4-3 (W-T-L) and he tied Tiger Woods in match play in 2002. Jesper also represented Sweden at the 1994 and 1995 World Cup as well as the 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1997 Alfred Dunhill Cup.

Parnevik has won 5 tournaments on the PGA Tour in his career. He won the 1998 Phoenix Open, 1999 Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic, 2000 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, 2000 GTE Byron Nelson Classic and the 2001 Honda Classic. Parnevik has spent 38 weeks in the Official World Golf Rankings Top Ten. 37 of them were in 2000 and the other was in 2001.

Jesper has earned $14,625,854 on the PGA Tour in his career making him the 41st on the list of all-time money winners (NOTE: That number can be misleading because tournament payouts have risen drastically over the years). The only European to earn more than him on the PGA Tour is Sergio García,.

Parnevik has done well in majors as well. His best finish in the Masters was T-20 in 2001 and his best finish in the U.S. Open was T-14 in 1998. He has done much better in the other two majors though. In the British his best finishes are 2nd (1994), T-2 (1997), T-4 (1998), T-10 (1999), T-9 (2001). In the PGA Championship he finished T-5 in 1996 and T-10 in 1999. But since the 2002 British Open he has only made the cut in two majors. The last major he played in was the 2006 PGA Championship but he missed the cut.

More recently Jesper lost in a playoff to Justin Leonard at the 2007 Valero Texas Open in October. He missed the cut in the PODS Championship today.

On tour Jesper is known for his odd dress choice. He is married with 4 kids. One of them is named Pebble Beach, after the famous course in California. Tiger Woods met his Swedish wife Elin Nordegren when she was babysitting Jesper's kids. By the way, I never understood this. Why would a model be a babysitter?

Jesper resides in Jupiter, Florida and his nickname on tour is Spaceman.

Improving Your Morning From Around the World

Guten Morgen

6:13 A.M. is a bit early too be up eh? Well if you fall asleep at 10 it is not so weird.

Rangers won last night against the filthy Islanders. I watched the whole game and loved what I saw. They won 4-1 and it could have even been a larger margin than that. Sean Avery's goal was my favorite. Marek Malik passed it towards center ice and Avery deflected it in. He would score again on an empty net late in the game. Ranger goals came from Brendan Shanahan, Sean Avery (2) and Scott Gomez.

Rangers are on fire. They are now in 6th place, 2 points ahead of the Bruins and 3 ahead of the Flyers. Toronto beat Boston 8-2 last night, hehe. Ottawa is only 2 points ahead in 5th and the Devils are only 3 points ahead in 4th. The Penguins hold the division lead and are only 4 points ahead. How awesome would it be if we go from fighting for a playoff spot to the 1 seed in the East? It is not far off. Especially since we are 8-0-3 in the last 11. Big game against the Bruins on Sunday at MSG.

US Women take on Italy in their second Algarve Cup match. I will recap that for American Soccer Daily later in the day.

Red Bull New York defeated Red Bull Salzburg 3-2 in an exhibition yesterday. For some odd reason they played 85 minutes. theredmenace explained it well on MetroFanatic by saying "It's the exchange rate, the dollar is shit right now." Ángel, Sassano and Magee scored for Metro in a comeback where they were down 2-0.

Trialist Lidor Marmol is out for 6 weeks with a hamstring injury. Red Bull and Chicago are interested in him. Chicago is only interested because they have a bullshit discovery claim on him and know we want him so they want to get back at us for taking Osorio.

In other news Blogger's ability to save drafts is incredible. I just accidentally closed this but it was all saved.

On This Day in History (March 6)

1521 - Ferdinand Magellan discovers Guam on a voyage around the World that started in Spain and then went around the coast of South America, through the Philippines, around the coast of South Africa and back to Spain. He would die 52 days later. Guam is now a territory of the United States.
1820 - The Missouri Compromise was signed into US law by President James Monroe. It allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state but made the rest of the northern part of the Louisiana Purchase territory slavery-free. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 repealed the part of slavery-free territory. Stupid rednecks.
1836 - The Battle of the Alamo ended after a 13 day siege by 3,000 Mexican troops. The 187 Texas volunteers who defended the fort were defeated and lost the fort. REMEMBER THE ALAMO!!
1857 - The verdict of the Dred Scott v. Sandford case is given by the Supreme Court of the United States. It pretty much said people of African descent (even if they were never slaves) could never be citizens of the US. The 13th and 14th Amendment overturned this. Insanely simple logic also overturned it.
1899 - Bayer registers aspirin as a trademark. It was a powder until 1914 when it became tablets.
1901 - An assassin fails in an attempt to kill Wilhelm II of Germany.
1902 - Unfortunately, Real Madrid is founded as Sociedad Madrid FC. They would go on to win way too many trophies.
1940 - An armistice is signed by Finland and the Soviet Union to end the Winter War. The war lasted from November 30, 1939 to March 13, 1940. USSR had like 1,000,000 troops and Finland had like 250,000 but it was still pretty even. This war resulted in the Moscow Peace Treaty. It gave a few small parts of Finland to the Soviet Union. Over 250,000 Soviets died or went missing due to this war and all you get is a few small parts of Finland? lol, me and a few of my friends could capture a few small parts of Finland.
1945 - Communist government in Romania assumes power under Petru Groza. I know what you are thinking, who cares, I agree.
1946 - Ho Chi Minh signs an agreement with France which recognizes Vietnam as a state in the Indochinese Federation and the French Union.
1951 - Trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg begins. I did a paper on this in middle school but forgot most of the information. They were found guilty of being Soviet spies and passing information to the USSR about the American atomic bomb. They were executed by electric chair at Sing Sing (yes the prison they refer to on Law and Order) on June 19, 1953.
1957 - The British colonies of the Gold Coast and British Togoland become the independent Republic of Ghana. 49 years later they beat the US 2-1 in a group game at the 2006 World Cup due to a bullshit penalty call.
1964 - Cassius Clay changes his name to Muhammad Ali.
1964 - Tom O'Hara sets a new world record for the indoor mile run by completing it in 3 minutes, 56.4 seconds. What a beast, I struggle to do it in 10 minutes.
1981 - Walter Cronkite signs off
the CBS Evening News for the last time after 19 years. These days he is doing a good job of not dieing and by doing so depriving me of points in a death pool.
1987 - The British ferry MS Herald of Free Enterprise capsizes in about 90 seconds killing 193 people.
1988 - Students at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. go on strike in favor of the selection of a deaf university president. The protest was called Deaf President Now (how clever). Gallaudet is a school for the deaf and was oddly run by someone who could hear. They got what they wanted and
deaf man Irving King Jordan became the school's President. He served until 2006. I guess protesting was a fifth sense to these guys.
1997 - Picasso's painting Tête de Femme is stolen from a London gallery but was recovered a week later.
2006 - South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds signs a bill into legislation that would ban most abortions in the state.
2007 - Former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Jr. is found guilty on four of five counts of perjury and obstruction of justice trial. He is currently tossin' salad in prison.

Funny Posts From Christian Forums

I love these. I found them on various Christian message boards. Stuff in bold is my interjection.

"One child in my church is HORRIBLE. She is the most disrespectful, disobedient child I have ever seen in my life. She runs all over church, tries to steal Sunday school books, yells during church service, gets up and jumps on the pews, etc (El Diablo! El Diablo!). The kid had me so stressed out that I wanted to choke her (that is not very Christian of you)!"
Someone responded:
"The child may be acting like that because of problems at home (religious brainwashing won't help), children often express problems the only way they know how, acting out (children commonly act out due to boredom). God has placed that child there for a reason (no way?)."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What are your feelings on women being head pastors (good news for altar boys, no more molestation from the male pastor)? I know what the bible says. I want YOUR feelings on the issue. There is a female in the running to become pastor at our church and I'm having problems with accepting it (shocker). If she gets the job, then my husband refuses to go back to that church (because he is a sexist asshole). I love my church (I don't). I hate to leave my church, but my personal beliefs won't allow me to stay at a church with a female as the head pastor (you are a sexist women, that is funny)."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"If you were swallowed by a fish, such as in the story of Jonah, would you be able to survive for 3 days (Wow)? What would keep you from being digested by the fish (Wow)? How would you have oxygen in order to breath (Wow)?

Is this just a story (Wow)?

Did it happen, and God performed a miracle (Wow)? If so, why would God perform a miracle for someone who was running from God (Wow), he could just call someone else to send the message (Wow)? I mean, Jonah didn't even rejoice at their [Ninevites] conversion (Wow)! If God doesn't go against a person's free will, then why the big fuss because Jonah didn't want to go to Nineva (Wow)?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"My kids have recently learned how to get on the internet. I have set a password for when you first turn on the computer, but is there any way to make it require a password to surf the net? Are there any browsers that work this way? I currently use Avant browser.

I don't mind them playing on sites such as barbie or abc kids, but I do NOT want them on sites like Nickelodeon (Nick has been brainwashing kids to have sex and do drugs for years!). They were playing a game on there yesterday and two cartoon characters started talking about french kissing (ohnoes!).
THIS is why we don't have cable tv anymore.... (your kids are doomed)"

Upcoming MLS Season

Ok it is crazy that I have not spoken about MLS yet in this blog. I love Red Bull New York (Metro) and recently joined the Empire Supporters Club. The season starts on April 5th and this has been an eventful off-season.

My first ESC event was when I went on the bus trip to New England for the playoff game against the Revs. Despite losing 1-0 it was fun and I met a bunch of people. I also got to know people through MetroFanatic.

About 15-20 of us also went the MLS Draft which was great. We were the best supporters there and out sang Sons of Ben (Daughters of Betsy) and D.C. Scum. We also got to meet new Red Bull Eric Brunner.

A match viewing party was held at Stout for the USA - Sweden and USA - Mexico matches. I became an official ESC member at the USA - Sweden viewing party. USA beat Sweden 3-0 and tied Mexico 2-2. Jozy Altidore scored his first international goal against Mexico and I went so crazy I thought I was going to pass out.

Off-season events have been fun. We also go to Ironmen games sometimes (indoor soccer). The off-season is not over yet though.

USA U-23 Olympic Qualifiers start soon and some of the ESC is going. Sadly, I can not go but hopefully we will have some watch parties. Also, March 29 is the day that most of the MLS teams start their season. We are going to watch the games together in Kearny and rip on teams all day. Then the next day some Red Bull players will be at Nevada Smiths to watch EPL action with us. I look forward to meeting them.

Metro opens the season against the Crew on April 5. The tailgate's theme is pulled pork and it will be great. I can't wait to chant and go crazy for our guys on the 5th.

GO METRO!

Good Morning

Live from the Hastings High School Library it's David Berger! Ok that was retarded.

As you can see I edited the layout of my blog. Why you ask? Because I didn't know how to do it until now. Not it looks awesome. I also edited minor technical things. I am also thinking of a blog name. The one I just made is decent.

Also, check this out: http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2008/03/usa-to-face-arg.html
I am pumped as hell. I am going and it will be my first USA game.

Derek Dooley (1929-2008)

Sheffield legend Derek Dooley has died today of natural causes. He was 78 years old with a life spanning from December 13, 1929 to March 5, 2008. He was born in Pitsmoor, England and died in in Sheffield.

Dooley started his career at Lincoln City in 1946 and scored 2 goals in only 2 games for the club. He then joined Sheffield Wednesday and played there from 1947 to 1953. He scored 62 goals in 61 games for the Owls and helped them win the Second Division in 1952.

It looked as though Dooley would have a great career until February 14, 1953. On that not so lovely Valentines Day he collided with Preston North End goalkeeper George Thompson and broke his leg. He would then have to get his leg amputated after complications with gangrene. Dooley most likely would have played for the national team as well.

He became manager at Wednesday in 1971 but was sacked in December of 1973 and then did the unthinkable by taking a job at rival club Sheffield United. He was not the head coach at United though. Dooley started as Commercial Manager and had various other roles including managing director before becoming the chairman of Sheffield's Football Club board.

He was awarded a MBE (Member of the British Empire) in 2003. He was also given a key to the city of Sheffield and a honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University.

More recently though Dooley played a key role in getting Sheffield United back to the Premiership. They moved back up the the EPL for the 2006-07 season for the first time since the 1993-94 season. They were relegated after one season though. In April of 2006 he moved down from Football Chairman to be the Vice President.

Derek and his wife
Sylvia shared a house in Sheffield since the 50's. He had a son, Martin, a daughter, Suzanne, and four grandchildren, including one named after him.

People have said that he is the only person who has ever brought Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United together. Fans of both clubs respected him. Sheffield United have named their new junior development center after him. Sheffield United take on Coventry City on Tuesday and Wednesday take on QPR on Saturday. Both clubs will have a minute of silence for Dooley.

The flags at United's home of Bramall Lane are currently flying at half mast for Derek.

Ultras of St. Pauli

A friend told me about this team a few months back. FC St. Pauli is located in the St. Pauli district of Hamburg and they play in the 2nd Bundesliga in Germany. The club was founded in 1910 and has never won anything significant but they have an extremely good supports group. The team is nicknamed The Pirates of the League.

In the mid-1980's they gained a "kult" following. Skull and crossbones became their unofficial logo. Supporters began to be known as very left wing people who turned games into a party atmosphere. As you probably know, the Berlin Wall still stood in the 80's in Germany. St. Pauli was the first club to ban right-wing, nationalist displays in it's stadium. At this time fascism inspired football hooligans so think racist skin heads. In 1981 the club only average 1,600 spectators and by the late 90's they constantly sold out a 20,000 capacity stadium despite bouncing back and forth between the 1st division and the lower divisions.

The fans are great. They are against racism, sexism and any kind of hate. They have one of the largest base of female fans in Germany because of their stand against sexism. They also have one of the largest fan bases in the country despite their current stance in the 2nd division.

They are friendly with the supporters of Celtic (Scotland) and Hapoel Tel-Aviv (Israel). St. Pauli fans have been known to go to Celtic's UEFA games. Hapoel Tel-Aviv share many of the ideas as St. Pauli fans and recently they waved a St. Pauli flag at one of their matches.

They last played in the first division in the 2001-02 season. They then got relegated two years in a row and faced financial trouble. Fundraisers brought the club back though. They made the semifinals of the DFB Cup (not the David Frederick Berger cup, it is the German Cup) in 2005.

In 2006-07 they won the German 3rd division so they are in the 2nd Bundesliga in 2007-08. They are currently in 12th with a 6-8-7 (W-D-L) record. Teams that finish 15th-18th will be relegated and the top 3 get promoted to the 1st Bundesliga.

Some notable players who suited up for St. Pauli are Americans Cory Gibbs, Ian Joy and Paul Caligiuri. Joy recently left St. Pauli for Real Salt Lake but he played 21 games for St. Pauli. Gibbs played in 60 games and scored 3 goals from 2001 to 2003 for St. Pauli. He has also capped for the US national team. Caligiuri played 15 games for St. Pauli and played in over 100 games for the US. He played for the yanks in the 1990 and 1994 World Cup. Croatian striker Ivan Klasnić played on St. Pauli from 1998 from 2001 and scored 26 goals in 95 appearances. He has been on Werder Bremen since 2001 and played for Croatia in the 2006 World Cup.

Some great videos of their supporters are listed below. Maybe you will become as obsessed with them as I am.

Carl Hoddle (1967-2008)

I will be honest and say I had never heard of this guy before he died on March 2. But he was a footballer so I looked into it.

Carl Hoddle lived from March 8, 1967 to March 2, 2008. He was born in Harlow, England which is in the county of Essex.

He was a midfielder and started his career at Tottenham in 1984 and would remain with Spurs until 1989. He never played for them though and moved to Leyton Orient where he would stay until 1991. Orient was in the lower divisions then just as they are now. While there he played in 29 games and scored twice.

He then played for Barnet from 1991 until he retired in 1995. They also played in the lower divisions and Carl played in 92 games scoring 3 goals. In 1994 Barnet played Chelsea in the F.A. Cup and interestingly enough, Chelsea's coach was Carl's brother Glenn (more on Glenn later).

He also spent a short amount of time at non-league team Woking F.C. (I can't find any numbers on it).

He returned to football to be a coach and scout for Wolverhampton Wanderers from 2004 to 2006. His brother Glenn was the manager at the time and when he left, Carl did the same.

Many articles are referring as him to the brother of Glenn Hoddle because Glenn was very successful. Glenn played for England in the 1982 and 1986 World Cup and managed the team in 1998. He played over 350 games for Tottenham and over 50 games for England.

Carl was found dead from what looks like a heart attack.

More on the National Gladiator League

Ok so I first introduced the NGL in my post about pancakes and babies. I spoke to a few people who agreed that it would be awesome. Here is the layout.

We will start with 12 teams. Like the NBA there would be an Eastern Conference and Western Conference. They would use NFL stadiums and would be affiliated with NFL teams. The founding teams would be:

WESTERN CONFERENCE
Glendale Gladiators (Glendale, Arizona, University of Phoenix Stadium): The Super Bowl was there this year. Remember how the half time show sucked a big fat one? The halftime show could have been the Glendale Gladiators against 10 lucky spectators.
Oakland Imperials (Oakland, California, McAfee Coliseum):
You can't tell me those overweight middle aged Raider fans who dress up in black and silver to football games wouldn't love this.
Houston Spartans (Houston, Texas, Reliant Stadium): There would obviously need to be a team called the Spartans. The players would do a Spartan war cry. Imagine the merchandise that would be made. An action figure that has a button that you press and it yells "THIS IS SPARTA!"
Hawaiian Kumu Nui (ʻAiea, Hawaii, Aloha Stadium): In Hawaiian it means the Hawaiian Coconut Trees.
Mile High Executioners (Denver, Colorado, Invesco Field at Mile High)
Seattle Caesars (Seattle, Washington, Qwest Field)

EASTERN CONFERENCE
New York Romans (East Rutherford, New Jersey,
Giants Stadium): Just like other New York franchises they would play in Jersey.
White House Rebels (Washington D.C., FedExField): The President would have season tickets. Congress would attend matches when they are not passing bills.
Guantánamo Bay Terrorists (Guantánamo Bay, Cuba): A stadium would need to be built of course but the player pool would be a large one. All the prisoners there should be doing something, am I right?
Philadelphia Quakers (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lincoln Financial Field): The stadium already has a holding cell. Philly fans are barbaric assholes, they will love this.
Detroit Ligers (Detroit, Michigan, Ford Field): Breeding ligers for the games would be great. The motor industry is based in Detroit so they could make a lot of vehicles for matches. Detroit is also a city with a lot of crime. Crime = more players.
Boston Greeks (Foxboro, Massachusetts, Gillette Stadium): The Jets-Patriots rivalry will now extend to Romans-Greeks.

The season will consist of 16 games. You would play teams in your conference twice and teams in the other conference once. The top 2 from each conference would go to the playoffs. E1 vs. E2 and W1 vs. W2 in the first round. Winners meet in a final.

Each team would consist of 10 players and 5 animals. You would get points by killing people. You could also make people surrender. The crowd would do thumbs up or down to decide people's fate.

This could become an international sport. If it does well in the States (which it will) then NGL Europe would start. One day a World Cup could start.

This would help solve overcrowding prisons and it would make a LOT of money. Every team would sell out, trust me. League expansion would be done in the future.

What do you think?

Federer loses second match in a row

Here is something that just does not happen. Roger Federer, by far the best tennis player in the world has now lost two matches in a row. He lost to Scotsmen Andy Murray yesterday at the Dubai Tennis Championships in the first round. The final score was 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 6-4.

Federer’s last loss was at the Aussie Open in the semis to future champion Novak Đoković. That was obviously a shocker since Federer has won the U.S. Open and Wimbledon from 04-07. He struggles a bit in Australia, only winning in 04, 06 and 07.

Then of course is the French Open which he reached the 06 and 07 final in but lost to Nadal who owns on clay. Way too many of the greats have never won the French. People like Johnny Mac, Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras surprisingly never won at Roland Garros. Combined those three players won 29 frickin grand slams!

But back to Murray. The 20-year old is 2-1 against Federer which in this day and age is phenomenal. Federer has won the Dubai Tennis Championships four times. He has also not lost a first round match since the summer of 2004. Long time eh.

I am disappointed in Federer’s post match comments. He told the BBC:

“I don't think he's changed his game a whole lot since I played him in the Bangkok final. Not that I'm disappointed but I really would have thought he would have changed it in some ways.”

Federer won that match in 2 sets by the way. But still, what the fudge? He beat you and you criticize him? Douchebag. Murray also beat Roger in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters in 2006.

I figured I wouldn’t talk about the match here since other sites have done and I did not see it. Anyway, Murray goes on to face España’s Fernando Verdasco in the round of 16. Murray beat Verdasco in the final of the 2007 St. Petersburg Open in mother Russia.

Totally irrelivant but I wrote this in Word and then copied it into here and the format went all retarded on me. I had to delete a bunch of extra lines. Lame.

Random Article adventures

This is what I came across when clicking random article. I skipped things that were way too long or stupid.

Quentin Roosevelt (1897-1918): Son of President Teddy R. Joined US Army Air Corps in World War 1. Died in aerial combat over France. Was engaged to Flora Payne Whitney who was the great-granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt (insanely rich). The fourth child of Teddy R was named after Quentin and he was Quentin Roosevelt II. He died in a plane crash in World War 2.
To sum it up, don't join the army if your name is Quentin Roosevelt.
Dave Johnson (announcer): American sportscaster, specializing in horse racing. Apparently coined the prase "And down the stretch they come!" Called the Kentucky Derby from 1978 to 1980 and 1987 to 2000.
438: Yazdegerd II becomes King of Persia. Who Knew! Apparently he was very religious and persecuted people of other faiths. Shocker.
South Australian Register: First newspaper in Southern Australia. First published in 1836 (in London) and dissolved like a 100 years later. It documented shipping schedules, legal history and court records at a time when official records were not kept.
J. Thomas Looney (1870-1944): Started the theory that Shakespeare was not a real dude. Sigmund Freud read his stuff and liked it, not bad.
Brent Forrester: Emmy award winning TV writer. Written for shows like The Simpsons and The Office.
1996 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season: Poorly written article. Only an intro, no sections. But anyway, they went 6-10 under Tony Dungy. Warren Sapp helped the team win 5 of their last 7 games.
Lama (band): Pop/rock band in Ukraine. Won Best Ukrainian act award of MTV Europe Music Awards. How hard could that be?

The never ending list begins here

Things that are annoying:

*Books on how to raise children.
*Wealthy actors making commercials telling me to donate money and/or food to people who are really poor. They list several excuses people say.
*When I am bored in class and I start to play with a dime and get it stuck in my nose and then have to get it out without people noticing I have a dime stuck in my nose.
*When I bookmark a website and put in my toolbar and it doesn't have an icon.
*Emails I get about male enhancement that are in German or another European language.
*When I purchase a strawberry shortcake ice cream bar and one side is mysteriously missing the coating of crumbs that are supposed to be all over it.
*Obnoxiously extravagant weddings.
*Youtube videos of 12 year old girls saying "penis".
*Weird tingling in my ankle.
*Random cuts/scratches on my leg.
*MLS off-season.
*When water and soap get in the small part of my glasses between the rubber ends and the metal so it like sits there and then smells like death. Then I have to wash it so it doesn't smell rancid.
*When I wake up in the middle of the night and my sheets are untucked. Then I try to get back to sleep and I can't because the sheets are everywhere and I have to remake the entire bed at 3 AM.
*Fat people taking up 2 seats on the subway.
*When I am sitting in the front seat of my car and my phone, wallet, etc. falls out of my pocket under the seat. It is impossible to get.
*When I am eating a seemingly delicious apple that has a huge hidden disgusting brown spot.
*When a piece of popcorn falls on my rug and I step on it. Little pieces go everywhere so I need to get a vacuum.
*Literature.
*No rugby on ESPN.
*When I order Sprite in a restaurant and the flavor dies since it has been sitting there for like 10 years so it tastes like seltzer.
*Rangers trading U. of Michigan product Al Montoya.
*When I turn my monitor off at night but I accidentally double click it so it stays on.
*When I start a new Word document but I accidentally made writing start at the absolute top of the page so I have to open a new document, save it as something else, erase the content, and use that as a new document. When I erase the document but accidentally click save instead of save as and then the old document is gone.
*Dominoes Pizza emailing me every day with new offers since I ordered online once. I don't want pizza every fucking day, go away.
*Lack of smiley's on MetroFanatic. Other sites have more.
*Dr. Pepper.

Weekday matchups of any interest

Tuesday
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

AC Milan vs. Arsenal
First leg was 0-0 so a 1-1 tie would be enough for Milan. Gunners should win though.

Barcelona vs. Celtic
Barce won the first leg 3-2 in Scotland. They will maul Celtic at Camp Nou.

Sevilla vs. Fenerbahce
Fenerbahce won the first leg 3-2, Sevilla will probably be able to overcome the first leg but I hope to see an upset. The Turkish champs have great fans, hope they win.

Manchester United vs. Lyon
What do I think of Manchester United? Ehhhhhhhhhh. First leg was 1 to 1. I doubt Lyon can win in Old Trafford. I hate Man U so hopefully Ronaldo will be red carded for a dive in the first minute and they will lose.

Wednesday
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Porto vs. Schalke 04

Schalke won the first leg 1-0. I hope to see the German club advance. The honest reason is because I like to use them in FIFA.

Real Madrid vs. Roma
Roma won the first leg 2-1. As much as I want to see Madrid lose, I don't think it will happen.

Chelsea vs. Olympiacos
First leg was 0-0. This time at the Bridge though? Close in the 1st half. Chelsea by 2.

Liverpool vs. West Ham (English Premier League)
I am hoping this is on FSC. I am too lazy to check though. I assume FSC will show a match from Saturday instead of showing a live game because FSC likes balls in its face. I hope West Ham wins since Liverpool is fighting for a place in European competition.

Thursday
UEFA CUP

Fiorentina vs. Everton

Tim Howard won't let anything past him, probably because he is incredible. Go Toffees.

Tottenham vs. PSV
I would like to see a Dutch team advance instead of another damn English team.

Bolton vs. Sporting Lisbon
How the hell is Bolton this far in UEFA? Due to a friend being a Lisbon fan I hope to see them advance.

Marseille vs. Russian team with a name too hard to spell
I hope that Russian team advances, just for kicks.

Benfica vs. Getafe
START FREDDY DAMN IT. Freddy Adu will rip Getafe a new asshole.

The other UEFA match ups are semi-interesting to me so I don't feel like taking 45 seconds to write them down.

COPA LIBERTADORES

Boca Juniors vs. Atlas
Watching Boca play is fun. I hope I get to watch it on a Spanish channel.

Nacional de Montevideo vs. Flamengo
Some ESC members support Nacional, if it is on I will watch it.

FRIDAY

Swansea vs. Millwall (English League One)
League leaders Swansea play American Zak Whitbread and Millwall. Go Millwall!

Grimsby vs. MK Dons (English League Two)
Jemal Johnson and League Two leaders Dons....'nuff said.

Borussia Dortmund vs. Hertha Berlin (German Bundesliga)
Hopefully this is on Gol TV? Don't think I will get home in time anyway eh.

RKC Waalwijk vs. TOP Oss (Dutch Eerste Divisie)
American Charles Kazlauskas is on Top Oss. He is a cool guy.

Standard Liege vs. unimportant Belgian team (Belgian Jupiler League)
All your base belong to Onyewu

There it is! Hopefully I can watch some of these games.
